Five people lost their lives on Wednesday morning when a FlixBus bus crashed on a German freeway, local police confirmed. More than twenty other passengers were injured.

The accident occurred on the A9 near Leipzig in eastern Germany. At around 9.45 a.m., the double-decker coach travelling from Berlin to Zurich veered from the lane onto the shoulder of the road. It then continued on its way for around a hundred meters before overturning onto its side.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, the causes of which remain unclear.

The freeway between Berlin and Munich was closed for several hours in both directions. It took three hours to right the vehicle and remove the bodies of some of the victims.

Fifty-three passengers and two drivers were on board, according to FlixBus, which announced that the driver behind the wheel at the time of the accident was not among the victims. He had set off at 8 a.m. and had previously respected all mandatory breaks and rest periods.
