US presidential 2024: Kamala Harris' campaign team raises $200 million in a week

Steph Deschamps / July 30, 2024

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris raised $200 million in donations for her presidential campaign in just one week, according to her campaign team.

Two-thirds of these contributions would come from new donors, demonstrating broad popular support among the Democratic Party base.
Last Sunday, Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race. Since this announcement, Kamala Harris has received almost unanimous support from influential party figures, including Joe Biden himself.

On the very day of Joe Biden's withdrawal, Kamala Harris raised $81 million, a 24-hour record, according to her team. By way of comparison, the Democratic president's campaign team had only $96 million at the beginning of July, having spent 93% of the funds raised the previous month.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign team filed a complaint with the Election Commission, arguing that the transfer of the $96 million to Kamala Harris's campaign was illegal. Although the situation is unprecedented, campaign finance experts believe the transfer is probably legal.

Donald Trump, for his part, has adopted a more cautious financial strategy. His campaign team spent 46% of the funds raised in June, retaining a cash balance of $128 million at the beginning of July.

In the second quarter of 2023, Donald Trump and the Republican Party raised $331 million, compared with $264 million for Joe Biden's campaign team.

The U.S. presidential election campaign entered its home stretch on Sunday, with one hundred days to go.

Kamala Harris's candidacy will be officially endorsed at the Democratic convention, scheduled for August 19-22 in Chicago. Her running mate has yet to be announced.
