Thousands evacuated in California due to wildfires, state of emergency declared

Eva Deschamps / September 10, 2024

Hundreds of firefighters have been deployed to battle the flames, which have already affected over 7,000 hectares in San Bernardino County, not far from Los Angeles. US media are reporting that Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in order to deploy additional resources to fight the blaze.

In addition, the more than 6,000 residents of two villages in the area, Running Springs and Arrowbear Lake, had to leave the area, writes CBS News. On Saturday night, the fire quadrupled in size and is still not under control.

Combined with the heat, the smoke from fires can form storm clouds, accompanied by numerous flashes of lightning. This makes it more difficult for firefighters to bring the flames under control. So far, firefighters have managed to protect the surrounding houses.
