Shooting in a church in the United States: one dead and four seriously injured

Steph Deschamps / May 16, 2022

One person died and four were critically injured in a church shooting in California on Sunday, Orange County police said, a day after a mass shooting in New York state that left 10 people dead. Parishioners were attending a banquet after a morning church service when the gunman began his rampage, authorities said.

They then arrested the shooter and tied his legs with an extension cord and confiscated at least two weapons before officers arrived at the scene to neutralize him, Orange County Deputy Chief Jeff Hallock said at a news conference. This group of churchgoers displayed exceptional ... heroism and bravery, Hallock said. They undoubtedly prevented additional injuries and deaths.

Investigators are still looking for a motive, he added, saying the suspected shooter, who was not injured in the incident, is believed to be an adult male of Asian descent in his 60s.

Four people are seriously injured, police wrote on their Twitter account,  adding that one victim died at the scene of the incident. An emergency call was received at 1:26 p.m. from Geneva Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon, according to law enforcement.

We have arrested one person and recovered a weapon that may have been involved in the crime, the sheriff's department had said in a tweet.

The police were seeking to clarify this new shooting with the 30 to 40 witnesses present in the church, she also said. California Governor Gavin Newsom's office said it was working with local officials and monitoring the situation. No one should have to fear going to their place of worship. Our thoughts are with the victims, his office tweeted.

This is upsetting and disturbing news, especially less than a day after a mass shooting in Buffalo, tweeted Democratic Congresswoman Katie Porter, who represents Orange County in Washington. This should not be our new normal.

According to the Sheriff's Department, the church is located in the city of Laguna Woods, 70 miles southwest of Los Angeles.
