The United States is once again in mourning after a shooting. A suspect was arrested and taken into custody Thursday, June 16, after shooting in front of a church in Vestavia Hills, Alabama (southern United States). One person was killed, and two others were injured, the city's police announced. Three people at Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church were shot. Two victims are in a local hospital receiving treatment. Unfortunately, one victim died from his injuries, Vestavia Hills police detailed on their Facebook page.

Vestavia Hills police said there was no additional threat to the city. The shooting took place in front of the church shortly after 6 p.m. while a potluck, a community meal where everyone brings a dish, was being held, according to the Saint Stephen's website.

The United States is going through a spike in gun violence, marked in particular by the killing at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24, which left 21 dead, including 19 children. So far this year, more than 20,000 people have died from firearms in the United States, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which includes suicides in its data.
