Jimmy Carter was 100 years old, and the oldest U.S. president of all time. His term of office lasted from 1977 to 1981. He was the 39th President of the USA.

His son confirmed the death but did not specify the cause. In a statement issued in February 2023, The Carter Center had announced that the former president, after a series of hospital stays, had decided to stop medical treatment and spend the rest of his time at home, under palliative care. In recent years, he had been treated for an aggressive form of melanoma, with tumors having spread to his liver and brain.

His wife, Rosalynn, died on November 19, 2023 at the age of 96. The Carters had been married for over 77 years, the longest presidential marriage in U.S. history.

His last public appearance was at his funeral in Plains, where he sat in a wheelchair in the front row.

Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. The prize was awarded for his efforts in favor of the peaceful resolution of international conflicts, the promotion of democracy and human rights, and for his humanitarian work through The Carter Center.
