Eye drops cause death and blindness in the US

Steph Deschamps / March 18, 2023

A rare bacterium found in eye drops has caused dozens of cases of infection in the United States, with some patients losing their sight and one person dying. The drug has meanwhile been withdrawn from sale.

The drops in question ("Artificial Tears Lubricant Eye Drops") were produced by EzriCare and Delsam Pharma. Currently, 68 patients in 16 U.S. states have been identified as having been infected with the "pseudomonas aeruginosa" bacteria.

Health services in the United States have been informed of eight cases of blindness and one death.

An appeal was made to stop using the eye drops in question.
