California fires: a thirtieth victim of the Los Angeles fires discovered

Sylvie Claire / April 4, 2025
The remains of a victim of the wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles in January were discovered on Wednesday, bringing the human death toll to at least 30, almost three months after the fires broke out, local authorities announced.

A team from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office “traveled today (...) to Altadena”, a suburban city, “to investigate possible human remains found at the scene”, explains a statement from this service.

“On arrival, the six members of the response team carried out an investigation and determined that the remains were human,” says the same source.

The death toll from the fires “now stands at 30”, add the forensic services.

The fires that ravaged Los Angeles in January lasted several weeks. They initially spread very quickly due to strong winds, with gusts that sometimes reached 160 km/h.

In particular, the flames destroyed a large part of the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, home to many celebrities, and the town of Altadena.

An investigation is still underway to determine how they started.

Nearly three months after the tragedy, California authorities are still in the midst of cleaning up the debris, some of it toxic, from the thousands of destroyed buildings in the region.
