Two buses, one filled with tourists, collided on Thursday evening in New York's Manhattan district, injuring more than 80 people, including 18 hospitalized, but not life-threatening, according to the fire department.

The accident occurred at around 7:00 pm(01:00 Belgian time) on First Avenue near Gramercy Park, explained New York City Fire Department Assistant Chief Kevin Murphy.

Images posted by firefighters on Twitter show a double-decker, open-top tour bus having crashed into the rear of another city-operated bus.

"Both buses appeared to be full," said Paul Hopper, an assistant chief of the fire department's emergency medical service.

We transported 18 patients" to hospital, he said, adding that the prognosis was not life-threatening.

In addition, 63 other passengers from the two vehicles were attended to by medical personnel at the scene, Hopper said.

A lot of the injuries are just cuts, bruises, scratches, a few suspected fractures, some head and neck injuries too," he continued.

Firefighters had to use ropes and ladders to extract the passengers from the double-decker bus, as one of its doors had been damaged, according to Mr. Murphy, who declined to comment on the cause of the collision.

The nationality of the injured was not immediately known.
