After the killing in Texas, the police under fire

The investigation into the Texas shooting that left 19 children and two adults dead on Tuesday, May 24, is moving forward and police are under fire. It says that after shooting his grandmother in their home in Uvalde, the 18-year-old assailant headed to the elementary school where he was able to enter without being immediately intercepted.

It had been reported that a school district police officer confronted the suspect who was making his entrance. This is not accurate, he entered undisturbed at first. So from his grandmother's house to the ditch near the school where he left his vehicle, until he entered the school, he was not confronted by anyone, said Victor Escalon, regional director of the Texas Department of State Safety, at a press conference on May 26, 2022.

Joe Biden said he would visit the scene of the tragedy this Sunday.

The U.S. leader sharply criticized the gun lobby and called on Congress to limit access to guns. 90% of gun owners support universal background checks. 84% of Republicans and 80% of NRA members support background checks. As the president said this week, it's time to turn that pain into action, it's time for Congress to act, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said away from a press briefing in Washington on May 26.

This is not the first time that Democrats have proposed similar bills, which were rejected by Republicans. Republicans believe that access to guns is not to blame for this type of crime and point to the Second Amendment of the Constitution which allows the carrying of guns.

Ironically, the National Rifle Association (NRA), a powerful pro-gun lobby, is holding its annual conference this week (May 27-29) in Houston, Texas. The former American president Donald Trump as well as other figures of the conservative Republican party such as Senator Ted Cruz are attending. The NRA, which reacted after the attack by saying it would reflect on these events and pray for the victims.
