A pickup truck plowed into a group of people celebrating the American national holiday in New York City, killing at least two and injuring seven, police said Thursday evening (local time).

The incident occurred in Corlears Hook Park, in lower Manhattan, where hundreds of people had gathered to celebrate Independence Day. Police say the driver was possibly under the influence of alcohol. There is, for the moment, no indication of a terrorist motive.

One person was arrested at the scene of the accident, the New York Times reported, citing the police. The investigation is ongoing.

July 4, the day on which the United States gained independence in 1776, is celebrated with great pomp and ceremony across the country, including processions and fireworks displays.
