US President Donald Trump, who has never been seen wearing a mask in public, said on Wednesday that it would be "no problem" for him to wear one. He also reiterated his belief that the coronavirus would "disappear" at "some point ».
"It wouldn't be a problem for me (...) If I were in close proximity to people, I would," he said on Fox Business when several regions of the United States recorded a dramatic increase in the number of Covid-19 cases. "Most of the time, I am not in this situation," he said, however, noting that everyone he met was tested in advance.
"I'm all for masks, I think masks are a good thing," he said, while being skeptical about making them mandatory at the national level. "There are many places in the country where people stay very far apart" from each other, he said.
"I think we're going to be very good with the coronavirus, I think at some point it will just sort of disappear," he added. "I hope," he said.
Asked again by the reporter about whether he really thought the virus was going to disappear, he replied in the affirmative. "Yes I think so. At a certain time. And I also think that we will have a vaccine very soon.
In February, Mr. Trump had already made similar comments. "It will disappear. One day, as if by a miracle, it will disappear, ”he said.
Many Republicans, including the powerful Senate leader Mitch McConnell, are increasingly encouraging people to hide their faces. While Vice President Mike Pence wore a mask on several occasions, particularly during a recent trip to Texas, Donald Trump has never been seen in public with a mask.
