Norway announced Friday a donation of nearly one billion euros to Ukraine over two years, during a visit to the country by its Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store.

This major donation of 10 billion Norwegian kroner, which is in addition to previous aid announced by Oslo, must be used for humanitarian aid, reconstruction of the country, arms purchases and support for the functioning of the Ukrainian authorities, said the Norwegian government in a statement.

We stand with the Ukrainian people, Store said in the statement. We contribute to support the Ukrainian people's fight for freedom. They are fighting for their country, but also for our democratic values.

The announcement was made on the occasion of the Norwegian Prime Minister's visit on Friday to Kiev and to Yahidne, a village hard hit by the war in Ukraine.

Shaken by his visit, the head of government described the village as a glimpse of hell on earth, according to the Norwegian news agency NTB.

On Wednesday, Oslo announced the donation to Ukraine of three multiple rocket launcher systems, weapons particularly sought after by Ukraine.
