War in Ukraine could last for years, says Nato chief

The war in Ukraine could last for years, warned the Secretary General of Nato in an interview published Sunday by the German daily Bild, urging Western countries to make their support for Kiev last.
We must be prepared for this to last for years said Jens Stoltenberg, we must not weaken in our support for Ukraine, even if the costs are high, not only in terms of military support but also because of rising energy and food prices.
These costs are nothing compared to the one paid daily by Ukrainians at the front, judged the head of the Atlantic Alliance.
Moreover, if Russian President Vladimir Putin were to achieve his goals in Ukraine, as in the annexation of Crimea in 2014, then we would have to pay an even greater price, Stoltenberg judged.
In this context, he urged the countries of the alliance to continue their deliveries of weapons to Kiev.
With additional modern weapons, the likelihood of Ukraine being able to push (Vladimir) Putin's troops out of the Donbass would increase, he assured.
This region of eastern Ukraine is now partly under the control of Russian soldiers.
