War in Ukraine: according to Volodymyr Zelensky, at least 485 Ukrainian children have lost their lives since the start of the conflict

Sylvie Claire / June 7, 2023

At least 485 children have been killed since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And these are only the officially recorded casualties: the real number is much higher.

So said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his daily video message on Sunday evening.

He also referred to the more than 19,500 Ukrainian children deported to Russia from the occupied territories. To date, it has only been possible to recover 370 "little Ukrainians", deplored the head of state.

Russia invaded its neighbor on February 24, 2022. It currently controls around 20% of Ukrainian territory. Last March, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, Russian Commissioner for Children's Rights. President Putin "is allegedly responsible for the illegal deportation of populations (children) and the illegal transfer of populations (children) from the occupied zones of Ukraine to the Russian Federation", which constitutes a war crime, this body had denounced. The arrest warrants remain in force for life, it stressed at the time.
