The United Nations and the Pakistani government will officially launch a $160 million appeal on Tuesday to fund emergency aid for Pakistan's historic floods, a spokesman for the U.N. secretary general said Monday.
Tens of millions of Pakistanis are battling the worst monsoon rains in three decades, which have killed at least 1,136 people, washed away countless homes and destroyed vital farmland.
And the situation is expected to get worse, with the rains continuing, Antonio Guterres' spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a press briefing.
In this context, with the government, we are planning an urgent appeal for $160 million for emergency relief activities, he said, adding that the official launch would take place on Tuesday.
The UN has already mobilized $7 million, including by redirecting money from other programs, to fund the most urgent needs, food, water, medical equipment, maternal health, shelter ..., he said. An additional $3 million has been made available through the United Nations Emergency Response Fund.
