Tragedy in Peru: at least 13 dead in terrible bus accident

Steph Deschamps / August 20, 2023

At least thirteen people were killed and more than five seriously injured on Saturday in Peru when a bus crashed into a precipice on an Andean road, local authorities announced.

The accident occurred in the morning when a bus carrying around 50 passengers from the Andean town of Vilcashuaman to Lima overturned and fell 200 metres in the Andean region of Huancavelica, in the south-east of the country.

Police and firefighters came to recover the bodies of those killed, including children.

"Firefighters and police are carrying out rescue operations," said Alvino Rojas, head of the Huaytará health center, on state TVPeru.

The seriously injured were transferred to the city of Pisco.

Road accidents are frequent in Peru, mainly due to speeding and poor road maintenance.
