The trade war takes a new turn: China and Canada retaliate by raising taxes on American products

Steph Deschamps / March 5, 2025

On Tuesday, Beijing announced additional tariffs on a range of US products, including chicken, wheat, corn and soybeans, in response to new US taxes on Chinese goods.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday raising additional tariffs on all Chinese products entering the U.S. to 20%, effective this Tuesday.

In response, the Chinese party-state announced on Tuesday additional tariffs of 15% on American chicken, wheat, corn and cotton entering China.

Other U.S. imports such as sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, seafood, fruits, vegetables and dairy products will be subject to an additional 10% tax.

The new taxes will come into force after March 10, 2025, the press release states.

Canada will also be implementing tariffs on US products from Tuesday in retaliation for those announced by Donald Trump, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday, believing that “nothing justified these measures” by the US.

“If the U.S. tariffs go into effect, Canada will retaliate as of midnight by implementing a 25% tariff on $155 billion of U.S. goods,” said the head of the Canadian government in a statement.
