A shooting in a major Bangkok shopping mall has left one person dead and six injured, Thai emergency services said, admitting an error in their initial death toll of three.

At first there was talk of three dead, but in reality only one person died," Yuthana Srettanan, director of the Erawan emergency center, told reporters.   "The assailant has been arrested. In fact, he has surrendered. (...) The police are evacuating the area. The situation has calmed down," Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin had said earlier on television.

According to the Thai Police Investigation Bureau, the arrested suspect is a 14-year-old teenager.

Hundreds of people fled the building, located in the center of the Thai capital, according to an AFP reporter on the scene. Videos on social networks show scenes of panic.

Siam Paragon is one of Bangkok's main shopping malls, popular with locals and tourists alike from all over the world.
