South Africa: Major fire at the Parliament in Cape Town

Eva Deschamps / January 2, 2022

A major fire broke out on Sunday morningat the headquarters of the South African Parliament in Cape Town, AFP journalists noted on the spot.

The roof caught fire and the National Assembly building is also on fire, a spokesman for the city's emergency services told AFP.

The fire is not under control and cracks in the walls of the building have been reported, he added.

The fire, which is spreading through the floors, broke out at around 03:30 GMT. In the early morning, flames and a thick column of smoke were visible above the building.

Cape Town has already been the victim of a major fire in April. A fire on Table Mountain overlooking the coastal city spread and destroyed treasures in the library of the prestigious Cape Town University below.
