Major winter storm expected in the USA: several states threatened by a blizzard

Steph Deschamps / January 6, 2025

A winter storm is about to sweep across the United States, the National Weather Service warned on Saturday, with freezing temperatures bringing heavy snowfall and icy roads for more than 55 million Americans.

The eastern half of the country will be particularly hard hit by this storm, which will send the mercury plummeting until at least Monday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), which warns that several states will experience a blizzard.

Warnings have been issued from Montana in the northwest to the East Coast. More than 60 cm of snow are potentially expected in New York and Pennsylvania, according to the NWS.

A blizzard is expected to hit the central part of the country on Sunday morning, and could make road travel “extremely dangerous”, he added, noting that the mercury would be close to -20°C in places. For some central states, snow accumulation could exceed 33 cm, which would be a record for more than ten years.

The possibility of freezing rain also worries the authorities, due to its potential impact on roads and the power grid. A widespread power cut would be devastating for residents who would be without heating in the middle of a winter storm.
