The death toll from a landslide on the island of Natuna in an Indonesian archipelago has risen to 21, while 34 people remain missing, police said.

According to the list of names of the victims released by the police, three-year-old children were also killed in the landslide in the Serasan district, part of the Riau Islands province located between Singapore and Malaysia, more than a thousand kilometers from the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

More than 100 additional officers have been deployed to support the local force of 50 officers in rescue operations, according to provincial police spokesman Harry Goldenhardt.

They are backed up by sniffer dogs dispatched from Jakarta, he added.

Large parts of Indonesia are prone to landslides during the rainy season, which usually occurs between October and April.
