The already tragic death toll from the collapse of the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in the Dominican Republic jumped on Wednesday evening from 124 to 184 almost 48 hours after the tragedy, to become the Caribbean country's worst disaster of the century.
“Unfortunately, we inform you that to date we have 184 people recovered (deceased), according to the certificate from Inacif”, the forensic institute, announced the director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE).
It was the worst disaster in the country's recent history.
“We'll be here until we recover the people who might be alive, or the bodies that might be in the rubble. We will stay as long as necessary. We won't abandon this site until someone claims a victim who is not in the morgue or hospital,” he said, even though there is little hope of finding survivors.
No living person had been pulled from the rubble since 3pm on Tuesday, said Mr Mendez, confirming the figure of over 150 injured. Aerial images show a gaping hole in the roof of the building, which collapsed at 00:44 on Monday night, while between 500 and 1,000 people were attending a concert by Merengue star Rubby Perez, who also died.
Rubby Perez's concert had attracted many fans and celebrities. In a video posted on social networks, the roof can be seen collapsing while the singer is on stage. Other videos on social networks show employees sweeping the venue before the tragedy to remove pebbles and small debris that had fallen from the ceiling.
The body of Rubby Perez was exhumed from the rubble, the authorities confirmed. The music of the man nicknamed “the highest voice in merengue” was heard throughout Latin America, the Caribbean and the rest of the world.
Many artists paid tribute to him on social networks. He is due to be buried on Thursday after a tribute. Dominican President Luis Abinader declared three days of national mourning in tribute to the victims of the tragedy.
