At least three people were killed and 14 injured after the collapse of a bridge in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, said authorities who do not rule out that other victims are to be deplored.

The structure, located near Careiro, 100 km from the regional capital Manaus, collapsed in the morning. The deceased are two men, one 39 years old and the other unidentified, and a 66-year-old woman.

Orleilson Muniz, commander of the Amazonas fire department, believes that the death toll will rise. "Some people are talking about eight, twelve, fifteen victims," he said, according to the news site G1. "We have identified a kombi [van] that had many people inside, [but] we have not yet located the people. »

The state news agency Agencia Brasil reported that at least 12 vehicles were abandoned at the bottom of the Curuçá River.

According to witnesses, quoted by G1, the passage was blocked by trucks. A few days earlier, traffic police had partially restricted access to the bridge to light vehicles due to structural problems.
