Austria's first female chancellor, Brigitte Bierlein, dies aged 74

Steph Deschamps / June 4,

Ms. Bierlein took charge of a caretaker government five years ago, after conservative Chancellor Sebastian Kurz's first government was toppled by a vote of no confidence following the "Ibiza affair ».

Brigitte Bierlein, previously President of the Constitutional Court, becomes Austria's first female Chancellor. Her government, made up of technocrats, will manage current affairs until early parliamentary elections.

"She took responsibility in a difficult time, out of love for the Republic and her homeland, Austria," said current Chancellor Karl Nehammer in a reaction to her death. "Our country owes her many thanks".
