Steph Deschamps / July 11, 2023

An attack on a kindergarten left six people dead and one wounded on Monday in Lianjiang, southern China, a municipal spokeswoman said.

The seven victims include "a teacher, two parents and three pupils (...) and a suspect has been arrested", she said, without immediately giving details of the age or identity of the victims, or the type of weapon used.

The attack took place at around 07:40local time in the city of Lianjiang, located in Guangdong province, according to the state-backed China News Network.

China prohibits its citizens from owning firearms. However, knife attacks have increased in recent years.

Deadly attacks specifically targeting schools have taken place across the country, prompting the authorities to step up security around educational establishments.
