At least two people died in a knife attack on a train in northern Germany on Wednesday. Others were injured.

At least two people were killed and five others injured in a knife attack on Wednesday on a train linking the northern German cities of Kiel and Hamburg, regional Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack said. The alleged perpetrator has been arrested.

The attack took place at about 3 p.m., said a spokesman for the Flensburg police.

The alleged perpetrator, who is believed to be between 20 and 30 years old, was arrested at Brokstedt station, where the regional train was stopped.

The motive for the attack has not yet been established, according to the police, who said that all possibilities are being investigated, from the act of an extremist to the gesture of an unbalanced person.

Witnesses of the attack described a "scene of panic" in the train, writes the media Bild on its website.

A large force of police and ambulance vehicles was deployed around the station, according to photos published by Bild. The railway company Deutsche Bahn announced that trains would be cancelled on the main lines.

The act committed on the regional train between Kiel and Hamburg shocks me deeply", reacted Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack, denouncing an "appalling act contrary to all humanity ».
