Stromboli volcano erupting off Sicily

Steph Deschamps / July 19, 2020

The Sicilian Stromboli volcano erupted in southern Italy on Sunday. There would be no damage at the moment, according to Italian media.

The volcano has been monitored by the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV) and civil protection since the successive eruptions of the past year.

A 35-year-old hiker was killed in a volcanic episode, which also caused panic among tourists in July 2019.

On Sunday, a plume of black smoke and bursts of lava could be observed on the volcanic island. Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
