Stabbing injuries at the Gare du Nord in Paris, the attacker arrested

Steph Deschamps / January 13, 2023

The man who injured six people Wednesday morning at the Gare du Nord in Paris is a Libyan born in 2000 under an obligation to leave French territory, police sources said.

The man being of Libyan nationality, France could not expel him to his country because of the instability there, the same source added. The French authorities do not maintain "a channel of exchange for the identification of Libyan nationals," it said.

Shortly before 06:45, the man attacked with a punch several people inside the Gare du Nord, injuring six people, including one seriously.

An agent of the PAF (Border Police) was among the slightly injured. He had tried, in vain, according to a police source, to surround the assailant.

Police officers managed to subdue him by shooting "three times" at him, according to Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, who went to the scene shortly after the events.

An investigation opened for "attempted murder" was entrusted to the judicial police, according to the Paris prosecutor's office.

The attacker was hospitalized with serious injuries to his arm and lung.
