Duration of compensation reduced by 25% on February 1 for the newly unemployed

Steph Deschamps / November 21, 2022

The duration of compensation for job seekers opening rights from February 1 will be reduced by 25% with a minimum floor of 6 months, announced Monday the social partners.

"The government has just announced a generalized reduction of rights of 25%," said Michel Beaugas (FO) after a meeting at the Ministry of Labour. Denis Gravouil (CGT) criticized a "totally unacceptable" reform.

An unemployed person who would have been entitled, for example, to 12 months of compensation under the current system will only be entitled to 9 months.

The first impacts are therefore expected from August 1.

However, when jobseekers reach the end of their entitlement, if the state of the labor market is "red" - an unemployment rate above 9% or an increase of 0.8 points over a quarter - then their benefit period will return to the level it is today.

If, for three consecutive quarters, the unemployment rate falls below 9% and does not increase by more than 0.8 points, the situation will return to "green" and the benefit period will be reduced by 25% again.

Today, the duration of compensation is applied according to the principle of one day worked, one day compensated, with a maximum of 24 months for those under 53 years of age, 30 months for those 53-54 years of age and 36 months for those 55 years of age or older.

The level of compensation and the conditions, i.e. having worked six months out of a reference period of 24 months, are not modified.
