UK sees almost four times more cases of Covid-19 with the Delta variant

Cases of the Delta variant of Covid-19 have almost quadrupled in less than a month in the UK, according to new data.

Figures from Public Health England show that a total of 161,981 confirmed and probable cases of variant Delta have now been identified in the UK - up 50,824, or 46%, from the previous week.

The Delta variant, which was first identified in India, continues to account for approximately 95% of confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK.

As of June 9, there were 42,323 confirmed or probable cases. The latest figure of 161,981, recorded as of June 30, is nearly four times higher.

While cases are increasing, we are not seeing a proportional increase in the number of people admitted to hospital, says Dr. Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, The data suggest that this is a testament to the success of the vaccination program so far and clearly demonstrates the importance of getting both doses of the vaccine.
