Songwriter Keith Reid, one of the founders of Procol Harum, has died at the age of 76.

The British group reports that the lyricist died in a London hospital on March 23 of cancer.

Reid founded Procol Harum in 1967 with, among others, singer Gary Brooker, who died last year. Although Reid was an official member of the band, he was only active as a songwriter for the group. He wrote almost all of Procol Harum's songs. So did "A Whiter Shade of Pale," the band's biggest hit.

Reid has also written sporadically for other artists. He contributed to John Farnham's 1986 hit "You're the Voice ».
