The British actor Murray Melvin, who played in the movies in "The Phantom of the Opera", "Barry Lyndon" and the series "Torchwood", died Friday at the age of 90, announced one of his relatives. "It is with great sadness that I must announce the death of Murray Melvin, actor, director and theater archivist," wrote on Twitter Saturday the director and director Kerry Kyriacos Michael.

Murray Melvin had according to him made a fall in December, "from which he had never fully recovered". He died Friday at St. Thomas Hospital in London. The actor was a "wonderful villain" as Bilis Manger in the "Torchwwod" series, a spin-off of "Dr. Who," producer Russell Davies praised on Instagram.

Born on August 10, 1932 in London, Murray Melvin had played in the film adaptation of "The Phantom of the Opera" (2004) or "Barry Lyndon" by Stanley Kubrick in 1975, in which he played the Reverend Samuel Runt. He received in 1962 the award for Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for "A Taste of Honey" by British director Tony Richardson.
