Steph Deschamps / May 10, 2021
The scene took place in the afternoon near the airport's departures terminal in Richmond, south of Vancouver, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said on Twitter. Police were deployed to the scene, it said.
Police responded around 3 p.m. after reports of several gunshots and are currently searching for one or more suspects, according to Radio Canada Public Radio. Officers intercepted a fleeing vehicle and received shots from the suspects but no officers were injured, Richmond police said on Twitter. The suspects are on the run, it added.
Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said on Twitter that local police are investigating and linked the shooting to gang violence. My thoughts are with the communities in the Lower Mainland that have been affected too many times by gun and gang violence, especially over the past week, he said.
Activities at the airport are back to normal, according to the police. The situation is under control and the airport is open and safe, airport authorities said on Twitter.
