Gunman near school causes panic in Toronto: he was shot by police

Eva Deschamps / May 27, 2022

Toronto Police say they opened fire and killed a man after spotting him walking with a rifle in an east-end area of the city. Several nearby schools had activated their lockdown protocols because of the threat.

Police Chief James Ramer said officers were called to the scene at approximately 1:00 p.m. on a report of a person walking around with a gun. He added that the individual reportedly confronted the officers and they shot him.

Chief Ramer declined to provide further details on the events as an investigation has been initiated by the police oversight body.

The Toronto District School Board had previously announced that four schools in the area of Maberley Crescent and Oxhorn Road had been placed on lockdown due to the nearby police operation.

A short time later, police reported that one of the schools was able to deconsecrate. According to investigators, there is no threat to public safety. Additional patrols are expected to be deployed near the schools.
