The states of Tennessee, Texas and Ohio were particularly hard hit on Thursday. Air traffic was also disrupted.
Energy providers reported problems affecting tens of thousands of customers. According to the website PowerOutage.us, up to 140,000 homes were without power in Tennessee alone.
Approximately 5,000 flights were also cancelled nationwide. Air traffic was temporarily suspended at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport in Texas due to ice patches on the runways.
The winter storm appears to be continuing. The weather service has issued a warning for the states of Mississippi and Alabama.
