According to our information, the suspect was involved in a domestic dispute moments before the incident and there is no evidence that this was an act of terrorism, said Daniel Thompson, the police chief of Waukesha, a city of 72,000 people east of the state's largest city, Milwaukee.
The driver, Darrell Brooks Jr, 39, a Milwaukee resident, drove his SUV through the crowd, killing at least five people and injuring 48 others, according to police and health officials.
Of the injured, 18 minors between the ages of 3 and 16 were transported to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee. Ten are in intensive care and six are in critical condition.
Darrell Brooks Jr. was previously charged in 2020 with reckless endangerment and again on Nov. 5 for a domestic violence episode, according to court documents.
He was later released on $1,000 bail, the Milwaukee District Attorney's Office said in a statement, admitting that the amount was unreasonably low given the nature of the charges against him.
