A car crashed into a crowd attending a Christmas parade Sunday night in Waukesha near Milwaukee, in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The tragedy left at least 5 dead and 40 injured (provisional), according to local police who spoke to the press. The emergency services were present in mass on the scene of the tragedy.
The incident occurred during a Christmas parade, about 20 minutes after he left. Police say there is no longer an active threat. Among the victims, several children were transported to the hospital.
It is not yet determined whether it was an accident or a deliberate act.
A suspect was spotted by police, but they have not confirmed or denied whether the person has been apprehended, according to CNN.
The vehicle, a red SUV, crashed into the crowd at high speed, according to videos of the incident shared. It was found by police, who have opened an investigation. The Waukesha Christmas Parade was in progress when a red SUV ran over the west side barriers and onto Main Street, the officer said. The car hit more than 20 people. Some of them were children and there were injuries as a result of this incident, he added.
Vehicle recovered Waukesha police have recovered a suspicious vehicle. An investigation is underway, Police Chief Dan Thompson said at a news conference, noting that authorities have identified a person in the investigation.
Police fired on the vehicle in an attempt to stop it, authorities also said. Schools will not open Monday and some roads will remain closed while the investigation is conducted, the police chief said.
The White House is closely monitoring the situation. The incident came at the end of a turbulent week in Wisconsin, where a young American man, Kyle Rittenhouse, was acquitted at his trial this week after shooting two men last year during riots and protests against police violence in Kenosha, about 50 miles from Waukesha.
