A gunman killed two people at a high school in the central U.S. state of Missouri on Monday morning before being shot by law enforcement, local police said.
An adult woman and a young girl died and several other people were injured, St. Louis Police Chief Mike Sack said.
The officers, who came to the scene after an emergency call, exchanged gunfire with the assailant, who was hit and succumbed to his injuries, according to the same source. "The suspect appears to be about 20 years old" and his identity has not yet been definitively established, Sack said.
Shootings, particularly in schools, are a scourge in the United States. In May, a teenager killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.
On Monday, a U.S. teenager who killed four students at his Michigan high school last year with a gun his parents gave him pleaded guilty.
