Joe Biden called Russian President Vladimir Putin a "crazy bastard" during a meeting in San Francisco with Democratic Party donors.
"There's that crazy bastard Putin, but the existential threat to humanity is climate change," the 81-year-old Democratic president, who is running for a second term, said in a brief speech attended by a small group of journalists.
The American president had already, in the past, called his Russian counterpart a "butcher" and a "war criminal. »
On Friday, he promised to announce "major" sanctions against Russia in response to the death in prison of opponent Alexei Navalny.
The Kremlin spokesman called US President Joe Biden's statements "shameful". "This is an immense shame for (...) the United States. If the president of such a country uses such lexicon, it's necessarily shameful," said Dmitry Peskov, in a video broadcast Thursday by a Russian public television journalist.
