A U.S. federal appeals court on Saturday suspended Joe Biden's mandatory vaccination requirement for employees of companies with more than 100 people while it examines potential serious constitutional problems.
The U.S. president's measure requires tens of millions of employees to be vaccinated against Covid-19 by January 4, or face very regular testing.
Announced in mid-September, it was adopted this week by the executive branch, and was immediately challenged in court, notably by the State of Texas, controlled by Republicans opposed to any mandatory vaccination to fight the pandemic.
This is a major setback for Joe Biden, who had just scored his first major legislative victory with the adoption of his infrastructure investment plan in Congress on Friday.
In its decision, the federal court of appeals for Texas found that the plaintiffs had made arguments suggesting that there are serious constitutional and procedural problems with the government's text. It is therefore stayed pending review by the court on the merits.
