The 31-day heat record in Phoenix, in the US state of Arizona, finally came to an end on Monday, according to the US weather service NWS. In this city, temperatures exceeded 43°C every day for a month. The mercury finally dipped back below this threshold, just barely, with 42.2°C recorded on Monday.
This slight reduction in heat is linked to showers, but the forecast is for temperatures to rise to 43°C or more by the end of the week. According to NWS, August could even be hotter than July, which is already likely to go down in history as the hottest month on record.
The last heat record set in Phoenix in 1974 was comfortably beaten. Back then, the 43°C threshold had only been exceeded on 18 consecutive days.
