With Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) just weeks away, the rumor mill is operating at full capacity. While much of the recent spotlight has been on the impending CEO transition from Tim Cook to hardware veteran John Ternus, supply chain leaks suggest that Ternus’s hardware division has a massive surprise in store for desktop users: a significant "Pro" overhaul of the beloved Mac Mini.
According to a series of leaks originating from Apple's Asian supply chain and corroborated by prominent industry analysts, the 2026 Mac Mini is set to receive its most substantial performance and design upgrade since its transition to Apple Silicon.
The M5 Pro and M5 Max Era
The core of the leak centers around the silicon. The upcoming Mac Mini will reportedly skip the standard base chips and go straight for the jugular with options for the unannounced M5 Pro and M5 Max processors.
Historically, the Mac Mini has been positioned as an entry-level desktop, with the Mac Studio serving the high-end professional market. However, sources suggest the line between the two is blurring. The M5 generation is expected to utilize a second-generation 3-nanometer process, delivering unparalleled efficiency and a massive boost to multi-core performance. By putting an "M5 Max" in a Mac Mini, Apple would effectively be offering Mac Studio-level performance in a footprint a fraction of the size.
Redesigned for Thermals and Connectivity
Packing that much power into a small chassis requires serious thermal management. The leaked schematics point to a slightly taller enclosure compared to the current iteration, making room for a redesigned internal copper cooling system inspired by the Mac Studio.
Despite the slight increase in height, the footprint remains the classic 7.7-inch square. However, the port selection is getting a distinctly "Pro" treatment. The new Mac Mini is rumored to feature:

The AI Workstation
Why the massive power boost for the Mini? The answer, unsurprisingly, is Artificial Intelligence.
As Apple continues its push into on-device AI—dubbed "Apple Intelligence"—the company needs its desktop fleet to be capable of running complex, large language models locally without relying on the cloud. The M5 Pro and Max chips are rumored to feature a radically expanded Neural Engine, specifically engineered to process generative AI tasks, complex video rendering, and code compilation at unprecedented speeds.
This aligns perfectly with the WWDC setting, where Apple is expected to announce major AI developer tools for macOS 17. The new Mac Mini will likely be marketed as the ultimate entry-level "AI Workstation" for developers and creators.
Pricing and Availability
If the rumors hold true, this massive upgrade won't come cheap. Analysts predict the base model of this new "Mac Mini Pro" tier could start at $1,299, bridging the current gap between the standard Mac Mini and the $1,999 Mac Studio.
