The United States on Thursday called on Russia to cease all military operations in and around nuclear power plants in Ukraine and said it supports Kiev's call for a demilitarized zone in Zaporizhia, which has been bombed again.
Fighting near a nuclear power plant is dangerous and irresponsible, a State Department spokesman said, adding that the United States continues to call on Russia to cease all military operations in and around nuclear power plants and to return full control to Ukraine.
The United States supports Ukrainian calls to create a demilitarized zone in and around the nuclear power plant, he said.
The site of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, was bombed again on Thursday, with Ukraine and Russia blaming each other.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned of a risk of catastrophe shortly before an emergency meeting of the Security Council on this subject, at the request of Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for the establishment of a demilitarized zone in Zaporizhia, which Russian troops took control of on March 4, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine began on February 24.
