A milestone was reached on Monday shortly after noon: Russia has put its nuclear deterrent force on alert, reports the Russian Defense Minister. As announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Monday that he had put the Russian military's deterrent forces, which may include a nuclear component, on special combat alert as talks with Ukraine began on the Belarusian border.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu informed Russian President Vladimir Putin of the decision, which affects strategic missile forces, the Northern and Pacific fleets, and long-range aviation forces, according to a ministry statement.
Mr. Putin had ordered this measure on Sunday, in response to the bellicose statements of Nato towards Russia.
