Despite work to repair energy infrastructure badly damaged by the Russian attacks, about nine million people are still without electricity in Ukraine. "But the number and duration of power outages are steadily decreasing," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky qualified in his daily video address Monday night.
He also said that important decisions were made in consultations with government officials regarding the energy situation and infrastructure. "We are preparing for next year, not just for the winter months," he said. "There are steps that need to be taken and the state will definitely take them," he said without adding specifics.
Zelensky further warned that Moscow could again attack Ukraine's energy network. "The air defense is preparing, the state is preparing, and everyone must prepare," he said. For weeks, the Russians, who invaded Ukraine in late February, have been targeting the Ukrainian power grid with missiles and drones, causing major power outages. Moscow seeks to put pressure on the population during the winter months.
