The death toll from earthquakes in Turkey and Syria has passed the 50,000 mark, the Turkish relief agency Afad said Friday. Some 44,218 people have died in Turkey alone, while neighboring Syria now has 5,900 deaths. These figures are likely to change. According to the Turkish public television channel TRT, citing Afad, more than 9,000 aftershocks have occurred since the earthquake of February 6. In Turkey alone, nearly 530,000 people have been evacuated from the affected areas.
