Prince Harry's lawyer pleaded Friday that, despite his exile in the United States, the queen's grandson will always be at home in the United Kingdom, as part of a court case to obtain police protection.
By ceasing to be active members of the Royal Family, Harry and his wife Meghan have lost the law enforcement protection afforded to them at the expense of the British taxpayer.
Harry offered to cover the costs and is now challenging the Home Office's refusal in court.
The couple, who left the UK in 2020 and moved to California, have private protection in the US, but Harry argues that they cannot access the information needed to be able to keep his family safe on British soil.
The applicant does not feel safe while in the UK, his lawyer Shaheed Fatima argued at a hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice.
It goes without saying that he wants to come back to see his family and friends and to continue to support the charities that are so important to him, she said, but above all, the United Kingdom is and will always be his home.
Last summer, Harry's car was chased by paparazzi after he left a charity event. The next day, he and his older brother unveiled a statue of their mother Diana, who died in 1997 in a car accident in Paris while being chased by photographers.
Harry filed the lawsuit in September, but so far the courts have not indicated whether he will be granted a hearing on the merits.
