Russian women who have had ten or more children will now be awarded the title of heroic mother after its reinstatement by President Vladimir Putin. This distinction was already used during the Soviet Union. According to the official news agency TASS, the women concerned will receive an allowance of one million rubles, or about 16,000 euros, for having brought so many children into the world.
This award was introduced during the Second World War to provide financial support to women with many children, while many men were fighting at the front. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Russian government abolished the title. The award was revived during another war caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. To receive the title of Heroic Mother, the woman and her ten children must be Russian citizens.
