One person was killed and four others injured, including Spanish footballer Pablo Mari, in a knife attack on Thursday in a shopping mall near Milan, media reported, citing the isolated act of an unbalanced person.

A 46-year-old Italian man suffering from psychiatric disorders was arrested a few moments after the attack, which took place in the late afternoon in Assago, on the outskirts of Milan, said the Italian news agency Ansa.

According to the same source, the person killed was an employee of the Carrefour hypermarket, located inside the shopping center where the attack took place.

According to Ansa, four people were seriously injured in the attack.

According to the initial investigation, the attacker, who was undergoing treatment for depression, grabbed a knife from the shelf before attacking several people nearby.

Among the injured was Spanish footballer Pablo Marì, a central defender on loan to Monza (Serie A) from Arsenal. Hospitalized, he was conscious and able to speak, a source close to the club told AFP.

Dear Pablo, we are all close to you and your family, we love you, continue to fight as you know how, you are a warrior and you will heal quickly," wrote the managing director of Monza, Adriano Galliani, in a tweet published by the club.
